Journeys of a Heart

Journeys of a Heart represents a spirit's eternal journeys. The spirit, symbolized by a winged-heart, is depicted traveling over four elements; earth, fire, water and air. Each side of the pedestal represents one of these elements: earth is represented by a dendritic pattern of a tree as seen in plan view; fire depicted as flames; water illustrated as a waterfall; and air portrayed as the Milky Way.
The concept of ‘Journeys of a Heart' will be enhanced through the use of two lighting effects; an ‘inner- glow' emanating from the four elements and an ‘up-lighting' accent on the winged-heart. To achieve these effects, one light will be placed at the base of the sculpture, shining up and out from the four elements, as demonstrated in the maquette. (To light the maquette, please touch the pennies together.) A second light will be located within the pedestal shining directly onto the winged-heart. (Space within the maquette did not allow for this light to be demonstrated.) Colour will be added through the application of lighting gels.
The pedestal will be constructed of angle iron and 14-gauge sheet metal with an anchoring system. The pedestal designs will be fabricated using various techniques; cutting, drilling, forging, etc and the possible use of other metals, i.e. copper. The heart will be formed and fabricated as demonstrated in the maquette. The wings will be forged with plate steel with deeply incised lines. The sculpture will be finished with a top clear coat.
The overall height of the sculpture is 6'-6”+ from the base to the highest point of a wing. The overall width (the wingspan) is 4.0'+. The pedestal is 18-inches square at the base tapering to an approximate 9-inch opening at the top.
